Form, Function, and Exercise - Why It's Important

Image
Have you injured yourself during a workout? It can happen sometimes, especially if you're tired and not paying attention to proper body mechanics.   A big offender is picking up the weights wrong, using the low back and not squatting to use your legs. Back pulls suck and can take a while to heal. As with any injury, they are uncomfortable and can cause setbacks. Getting in that workout is great but what's most important during your exercise session is form and function. Proper form executes effective movement and creates the results your looking for. Form and Function are Important Form and function use proper body movements to perform an exercise. This includes the initial pick up of the weights and how you set them down when you're finished. Using good form keeps you safe and your exercise effective. There is nothing fun about getting sloppy in the gym and hurting yourself. Especially when it can be prevented. Pay Attention The best way to make sure you are using prope...

Pushing Yourself Through a Tough Workout

Image
Sometimes exercise just feels hard and not on the top of the "to do" list. Times like this may require getting creative with self-motivation. Can you relate? I needed my interval timer clipped on this morning. It was a necessary tool to keep me pushing hard through my workout. Sometimes, music does it for me, but today was different. I needed more incentive to move it. Self-Motivation I depend on me for motivation and that can be hard sometimes. Being a  trainer doesn't exclude me from needing a kick in the butt when I feel like a slug. This is when discipline is heavily relied upon to turn up the motivation . Schedules can get busy, time seems limited, and workouts lacking. We can all relate to weeks or months like this. You may be asking yourself how a workout can get done or even pushed through when you are barely making it through the day. You may not think you can do it, but you can. If you dig deep enough, you will find the motivation to make it happen.  Stay Determ...

How to Enjoy Holiday Food Without Freaking Out About Your Fitness Program

Image
Do you stress about food over the holidays? You are not alone in this struggle. Many people believe eating off track even a little will derail their fitness program. Not true. Did you know the average person only gains about 2 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year? I think it's safe to say we can all relax and enjoy some holiday food without freaking out so much. You're Still Eating Healthy The holiday doesn't mean you're giving up on eating healthy. You are simply choosing to enjoy a little indulgence during the season. This is done without regret or guilt. It's called having a healthy balance. The holidays don't mean a free pass to overeat or binge. Quite the opposite. Eating for enjoyment through the holidays means you remain mindful of food intake. It also means you are listening to fullness cues telling you when you're satisfied. Eating to comfortable fullness is acceptable, not to feel like the stuffed turkey sitting on the table. Enjoying holiday f...

Are You Taking Responsibility For Your Health?

Image
Getting fit and healthy is a personal responsibility - agreed? It may be easy to blame the spouse or your bestie, but what it comes down to is personal responsibility. We can't expect others to have the same health goals or live your fitness plan . That belongs to you. Do it For You My hubby and I have an expectation of a couple workout before work. The alarm goes off but it's easier for me to get up without hitting the snooze. I'm an early morning person and he loves to sleep in a bit. My reason for sharing this is sometimes our couple workouts are hit or miss. Do I forget my workout because he wants to sleep for a few more minutes? No, I get my coffee and go it alone. The point is I am responsible for my health and that includes workouts and nutrition. It's up to me to take care of this body.  I do it for me. Being fit and healthy makes me a better person, wife, mother, and grandmother. Are you getting healthy for you or do you forget it based on others? Individual Go...
